Dennis and Sparky-Bones model the tomatoes. Planted in their buckets on September 16th. The 'cage' is made from 1-1/4" pvc pipe with a couple sheets of 4' x 8' reinforcement mesh with 4" holes. They are secured to the PVC frame with zip ties. Each of the 5 gallon buckets has a 4" hole drilled in the bottom to allow placement of a 4" net-pot (hydroponics sites will have these, along with Amazon, etc). I also drilled about 20 1/2" holes (spade bit for these!), to allow for some aeration. The soil won't fall out that much, don't worry about it. The media is 'soiless', mostly. I mixed in about 1/4 perlite, 1/4 garden soil, 1/2 peat moss. It is important to get a mixture that drains well and allows a lot of air space for the little rootlets to move. |
